Applying for a work permit in Indonesia does not have any age requirement in most industries and positions. However, as stated by the Indonesian Ministry of Energy, workers in the oil and gas industry must be between 30 and 55 years old to work in Indonesia.

This requirement does not include senior positions such as the general manager, chief executive or commissioner.

Procedures and documents
required to obtain a work permit

Before applying for an Indonesian work permit,
foreign employees and employers must obtain other types of visas and permits.
These include :
  • Foreign Employment Plan

    (Rencana Pengguna Tenaga Kerja Asing - RPTKA)

    The first document to be submitted is the RPTKA. Companies intending to hire foreign workers must obtain official government approval by submitting RPTKA to the Ministry of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia.
  • Work Permit

    (Izin Mempekerjakan Tenaga Asing - IMTA)

    After obtaining approval from RPTKA, the company can apply for IMTA from the Ministry of Labor, including the applicant's personal information and documents , such as gender, name, number, passport validity, education and work experience.
  • Limited Residence Visa

    (Visa Izin Tertinggi Terbatas - VITAS)

    Based on the approval of RPTKA and IMTA, employers must apply for VITAS at BKPM. BKPM will then send a letter of recommendation to the Immigration Department and notify the foreign employee to issue a VITAS.
  • Temporary
    Limited Residence Permit

    (Izin Tinggal Terbatas - ITAS)

    Upon arrival in Indonesia, VITAS will become ITAS. ITAS is itself an immigration status. Indonesian immigration authorities stamp foreign workers' passports each year to indicate their temporary resident status.
  • Temporary Residence Permit Card

    (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas - KITAS)

    Once the ITAS is approved, the Indonesian Immigration Office automatically issues the KITAS to the foreign worker. KITAS is just an identification card that shows that the foreign worker has ITAS immigration status.

How long is work permit

valid for ? Indonesian work permit is valid for 1 to 12 months.
The duration depends on the type of industry in which the candidate works and the type of RPTKA of the sponsoring company.

Some types of work permits and their validity periods are detailed below :

Urgent or Urgent Work Permit

Valid for one month This work permit is for urgent work that requires immediate intervention. This permission is granted to avoid any negative consequences for the sponsor or the community at large.

Temporary work authorization

This permit is valid for between 2 and 6 months and is for foreigners who work in trade, services and consultancy. It also applies to workers in sectors such as mechanical repair and installation.

Long-term work permit

Is valid for periods ranging from 7 to 12 months. Also known as a normal work permit, this permit is generally available to expatriates at higher administrative levels, such as managers, directors and commissioners.
